the heat is on

well friends, i realize it has been quite some time since that update i promised. needless to say, we returned from the islands safely and well rested. mom and mark thoroughly enjoyed the trip to lamanai and their laid back stay in our village. thanks again for coming to visit, we loved having you here!
in other news, it was difficult to jump back into the regular work week, but we've managed to get busy. i ventured to yet another stunning language arts workshop, this time in the village of august pine ridge, to talk with teachers about the new language arts curriculum guide. it was great fun (really, it was!) and i enjoyed the experience of seeing yet another village in the district. upon returning, my principal decided that it was finally time for us to do our own language arts workshop, which will take place this friday. lucky for me, two other volunteers from the district have agreed to come help out, as well as my fabulous husband. between the four of us, i think we can keep them captivated for most of the day, as we bring new life to reading, writing, and spelling. wahoo!
in addition to workshop wonderland, i've also been keeping busy with endless amounts of exercise lately. coy and i have been experimenting with an exercise regimen known as P90X (which is short for "this will kick your butt") and i've also been teaching a women's exercise class 3 afternoons a week. our first class was last tuesday, and we had 5 energetic ladies who worked out harder than they ever have before. thursday's class brought 13 participants, and this afternoon we packed 16 women into the school office to sweat out those salbutes we ate this weekend. it's been so much fun...the women are motivated and giddy to have the opportunity to exercise with each other, and i get to share my love of aerobics with them! i am currently searching for an 80s compilation CD to really boost our cardio segments. in the meantime, i survive with the few mj and madonna songs i've got, and i try to balance it out with strength training segments and lots of stretching. who knew i was an aerobis instructor?
this weekend hot season reared its ugly head and left us hiding in the coolest corner of our house with the fan blasting warm air in our faces. remember that time i thought i had adjusted to the weather? wrong. coy and i had a conversation yesterday that went something like this:

me: "i think we might die here."
coy: "no, love, we're not doing to die."
me: "are you sure? i think i might. why is it so hot?"
coy: "it will be ok. you'll be fine."

i proceeded to excape to the shower, thinking that this would be the ideal time for the cold water to spray down onto me. i turned the water on only to discover that...hey! wait a minute! why is this water hot?!!! what the....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
in spite of the heat, i will persist. somehow. it has, however, inspired us to finally get active about putting screens on the windows. our friend, mr. garrido, will start working on them tomorrow. being able to leave the windows open past dusk will certainly help keep it cool indoors.
this friday will be the last day of school before our 2 week easter break. coy and i plan to venture out to sarteneja, on the northeastern tip of belize, near mexico. we will try to take plenty of pictures and keep everyone updated.
hope all is well with all of you!

this is me practicing my downward dog for the P90X segment, Yoga X. it really is pretty extreme. once you finish, you really don't want to do another downward dog for a week!

we looked out our back door one day and found this volunteer vegetable plant. we thought it was a tomato plant, but upon further inspection, the fruits are quite long. maybe eggplant? who knows, but we figured we should stake it and find out. the ground was too hard to push a stick into, so we used this spare machete that was just lying in our back yard.

coy relaxing on the boatride back to belize city from san pedro.

the split which divides caye caulker into the mostly uninhabited northern part of the island and the bustling village which sprawls over the southern section.

mark and mom saying goodbye to the white beaches and delicious restaurants that make san pedro la isla bonita.
