with that said, we would like to take another moment to recognize our loyal friend and former peace corps volunteer, jessica, for her astounding ability to identify the one thing we never knew we absolutely could not live without, and for sending it to us. it looks like this:
this, ladies and gentlemen, is why i love africa. why i will always love africa. and why you should too. only in a wondrous place like the continent of africa can westernization manifest itself into something so fantastic and awe inspiring. imagine, if you will, an african woman wearing this piece of cloth as a skirt. (she exists, i can assure you.) now imagine another woman donning it as a head wrap. perhaps her sister-in-law in the next village uses the barack cloth to tie her baby to her back. maybe another household uses it to hang in the doorway of their mud brick hut.
coy and i proudly displayed this symbol of patriotism on our living room wall the moment it entered our home. perhaps this seems a bit overboard to some. well, call us groupies is you will, but this is definitely the coolest thing we have EVER received in the mail.
p.s. a close runner up is the birthday card i received a few weeks ago. it, too, is from africa. my friend collins, in zambia, somehow never misses my birthday. with a glorious picture of fake roses on the front of the card and a heartfelt message inside, i couldn't have asked for more. then i saw the picture he included. (it would be perfectly normal, as per zambian custom, for him to include a picture of himself.) the picture was of a lioness. behind a chain link fence. no explanation. just that. i heart africa.
